About the Museum

Bring your family, your friends, or the whole gang to the American Sign Museum for a fun experience! Your personally guided tour will take you through a century of American signs. It’s a sensory delight, and you’ll learn a little something too!

Be mesmerized by the spinning Sputnik-like signs from bygone eras. See hand-lettered show cards from the Las Vegas days of Frank Sinatra and Charo, ornate gilded signs created on glass, chasing light bulbs, ‘changeable’ neon that runs on radio waves, plus sign-making tools and equipment, salesman's samples, and more.

How it began. The American Sign Museum, a not-for-profit 501(C) (3) corporation, was founded by Tod Swormstedt, former editor and publisher of Signs of the Times magazine, as his self-proclaimed mid-life crisis project. It began as an idea, with no collection. With the initial support of ST Media Group, publishers of Signs of the Times, and the Museum’s Board of Trustees, it began to take shape.  Support across the sign industry continued to expand, allowing the Museum to open its doors in Spring, 2005. It has grown to boast a collection of more than 3,800 cataloged objects, with new acquisitions arriving all the time.

MissionTo inform and educate the general public, as well as business and special interest groups, about the history of the sign industry and its significant contribution to commerce and the American landscape.

What’s next The Museum quickly began to outgrow its leased home in the Walnut Hills area of Cincinnati. An extensive search resulted in the purchase of an historic building offering 42,000 sq. ft. of space and a 28-ft. ceiling in the Camp Washington area of Cincinnati. An initial 19,300 sq. ft. of the building is now being developed, and with the help of generous donors (like you!), the new, permanent home of the American Sign Museum will open its doors in Spring 2012.
