Just a walk around the block!
By Richard Kummerlowe
Reno, long known as a mecca for gamblers and as a place to get a
quickie divorce or marriage, plays host to a rich assortment of
contemporary and vintage neon signs. The recent Society for
Commercial Archeology conference in Reno provided an opportunity to
examine and explore many of the wonders that the area has to
offer.
While the conference was a fascinating mix of organized tours and
sessions, a self guided stroll of just a few blocks of "The Biggest
Little City in the World" quickly revealed Reno's copious collection
of advertising genius.
Whether In-town, Downtown, Uptown, ...
... Midtown...the Heart o' Town... at the City
Center...
... on the Town Site...or in the Town View...
...neon, porcelain enamel, and backlit plastic proclaimed both
DAY...
...and NIGHT
In the relatively compact and easily walkable downtown area, the
pedestrian is treated at nearly every turn to an exuberant
extravaganza of sight and sound.
From old to new, every site is a delight!
Unlike most places where signs have been degenerated and vilified
as object of disdain, Reno embraces its scene of light and
bright!
